Today I've been thinking about two of the most important things that have been key in my business this past year. Allow me to share!!!

#1 - Continued Education. I am huge on making the effort to take as many classes/workshops/seminars etc... that come my way. It's important to me to never stop learning, as cliche as that sounds and as hard as it is to make the time!! Last year, however I was introduced to an educational tool, that has helped me SIGNIFICANTLY in the MOST CONVENIENT of ways. Readers... I'd like to introduce you to PHOTOVISION.

For me, PHOTOVISION has been revolutionary because you have the chance to literally shadow a fabulous group of photographers in several genres via DVD!!!! For me, this means I can watch and learn at midnight (which is when I get the most done anyway)! I can learn on my own time - and LEARN I do. Seriously, I can't say enough about how amazing this has been for me. Many segments will take you through an entire session, shadowing a particular photographer. You will learn about all their equipment, you will see them take pictures and will learn exactly which lens and what settings were used. #2 - Social Media: The value of social media is something I am continue to learn about and work on each day. IT'S FREE ADVERTISING in so many ways, it's just a matter of how much time you are willing to invest and how creative you can be to garner attention/fans. To this, I look to an amazing blogger that I have followed for two years now: Jasmine Star of jasminestarblog.com. Today I received an incredible newsletter on all things social media for photography businesses and it happened to included an excerpt from Jasmine with some great advice. YES!! This is a newborn folks! And the most adorable, sweet, rolly polly one I have had the chance to photograph yet. Little Braden was only 10 days old for his session {and we caught him not a moment too soon} He was 10lbs of chubby delight - my favorite kind! And his beautiful Mama let me mold and pose and fold him in every which way... Of course with a little bit o' patience and milk the milk coma set in and we were able to get some beautiful shots. Over the past year, since I started offering one-on-one camera and photoshop classes I have had the opportunity of meeting with and teaching MANY new enthusiast!! It seems I've had a surge, especially in the past few months, but I love it, b/c it keeps me on my toes. Teaching is definitely one of my favorite things because LEARNING also happens to be one of my favorites things. And many times, as soon as I learn something I am eager to share.

SO, because one of the most frequently asked questions I get is: "How can I get sharper, more professional looking images" I am constantly researching (by practice, trial and error and professional insight from others) to come up with better answers. Valentines Day Wrap Up - Sunshine Here We Come!!

I hope everyone had an extra special Valentines Day this year!! I love my boys and LOVE the chance to celebrate that with them even more :)

I had to post our little V-day card to spread the love.... but also as a prelude to a VERY SPECIAL graphic design-ish announcement/give-away that is coming up and believe me it is COOL!!! I can't wait to roll it out next week!

AND... in more great news, I am headed South to the Sun in a few weeks and I couldn't be more excited!! It's no surprise that my Boys and I (and occasionally the hubby... when we can snatch him away!!) make our way down to Florida every few months to visit family and such, but in the meantime I have developed an AMAZING client base and we've had some FABULOUS sessions!

I will be heading back down March 3-11! I will be teaching a few classes and I have a few sessions already scheduled. Oh BABY!! Graham Newborn Session Sneak Peek {Charlotte Area Newborn Photography}

How adorable is this little Teddy Graham!! I had the pleasure of shooting lil' Graham last week and while Newborn sessions are one of my favorite genres (do I say that about every kind?!) they can definitely be a bit unpredictable!! This little guy was persistent... he DID NOT WANT to sleep, so we got some nice "wide-eyed" shots...

There are times however, when these little guys just don't want to be posed and folded and fiddled with. What do you do? I still go for the shot...

And then rely on a bit of photoshopping (still his face, just from a pose I didn't like as much)

I think by the end, we finally wore him out! He collapsed into a milk coma on Mamma!! All in a days (or 2) work!

THE POWER OF THOUGHTS, WICKED {The Musical} & WEDDINGS

For my 30th B-day (a few years back!!) what I wanted most was a trip to NYC to take a photography master class and to see Wicked - The Musical. I thought about it all year... I was going to make it happen.

I got my sister Ashlee (one of my favorite travel companions) on board, booked my flight, booked the master class and was set to go. Now, one might think, if you are going all the way to NYC to see Wicked one might book a ticket to the show as well, right?!! I was going to... that was until I heard about "The Lottery". See, with the lottery you show up 2 hours before hand and put your name in a hat. 30 minutes later they draw 10 winners who get 2 tickets at $26.50 each and get to sit in the front row. My thought: why would I spend triple that to sit in a crappy seat... where's the adventure in that?! I AM GOING TO WIN THE LOTTERY AND SIT IN THE FRONT ROW!!

RISKY, right? Especially considering hundreds of people show up each night with the same goal in mind! For some reason though, I threw "reason" out the door on this. I just knew I would get in. And, I thought about it all the time. I literally saw myself winning and doing a high kick to boot!!

Of course I had a sensible back up plan (try going back Fri/Sat.) but when we flew in to NYC on Thursday, it was destined! Ash and I dropped our stuff off at the hotel, walked the 15 blocks or so to time square, met up w/ my fabulous friend Amber (who brought in reinforcements just in case) and threw our name in the hat literally 1 minute before the drawing.

Well, you've either guessed or you know.... MY NAME GOT CALLED 3rd for the lottery!!! And, I did a high kick!! It was an amazing experience sitting in the front row... talking to the conductor, seeing the faces and feeling the emotion of the actors up so close and personal. I loved it and I felt EXTREMELY lucky!

Was it all luck? I will leave that up to you decide, but I for one, definitely believe in the power of positive thinking. Okay, I'm not talking about "THE SECRET" and I'm not saying everything you think about positively will come true (if not, I would have thought my way to millions by now!!).

I recently finished a book that really got me thinking about the power of our thoughts. We all possess SO MUCH POTENTIAL. However, much of our untapped potential resides within the layers of our thoughts. One of my favorite quotes is: "If you think you can do a think or think you can't, you're absolutely right" {Henry Ford}. Thoughts must become actions which allow action to parlay into achievements.

For me this means I can't just WANT to photograph a wedding/event/family etc... I have to go out there and work my but off to achieve it. But, KNOWING my potential and that I CAN DO, will likely allow me to accomplish that, rather than thinking, who I am to be a great photographer. MAKE SENSE?!!

Here's what else this means to me: This year I want to book 11 weddings (2011 = 11 weddings). My goal for my business and myself is to provide QUALITY vs. quantity. I'm not interested in booking 50 weddings that I won't be able to focus on. I know I will be booking almost double that in family/children/senior sessions anyway. I want to photograph 11 AMAZING WEDDINGS this year!! So, I am throwing it out there and sending ALL MY POSITIVE THOUGHT towards that goal. I will also be envisioning myself booking, shooting and capturing all 11 weddings.

Coupled w/ my positive thinking, I will be working my but off to make it happen! And who knows I just might get LUCKY!!

By the way, the next year (which was last year) Ash and I went back to NYC for my award. We did the lottery for the musical "In the Heights".... AND WON!! Front row again, baby!

STAY POSITIVE MY FRIENDS - it will take you farther than you can imagine!!

DAVID + ERIN {The Race to The Altar} - Charlotte Wedding Photography Sneak Peek

They say the internet has changed the world forever. For Erin, the day she sent out a proverbial list of characteristics of her "perfect man", her world too, was forever changed!! That cyber search resulted in the connection of Erin finding her perfect mate in David. David got pretty lucky himself!

This past November David & Erin were married at the Saint Thomas Aquinas Catholic Church in North Charlotte and celebrated that evening at the Lowe's Motor Speedway, SPEEDWAY Club. It's been a fantastic "ride" for me, getting to know and photograph this great couple!! AND, the wedding day did not disappoint. I am excited to finally post a peek into their beautiful day.

2011 Here We Come

First off: HAPPY NEW YEAR!! It was such an amazingly busy Holiday Season so it's been nice to take some time off over the past few weeks!!

Secondly, I must THANK YOU... my clients, friends, family and followers. This year has been the busiest and best yet for Hart to Hart Digital!! I am blessed and thankful. As I mentioned on my personal family blog, I had 82 sessions/projects/events/weddings etc... It's hard to sum up an entire year of work in words so I wanted to do something visual... and I wanted to pull a picture from each session, but that was a project in and of its self!! I have almost everything organized alphabetically so I think I made it to the M's...

Anyway, here's to continuing to find the balance within the busy, and joy amidst the stress. To stretching and taking risks, to dreaming, creating, reaching and fulfilling and going FARTHER than you ever thought you could!! Here's to another GREAT YEAR!!

Introducing little miss Zoe Jean... the sweetest thing! Seriously, and it's not b/c I am a biased doting Aunt!! This little girl is THE cutest thing ever! I have been waiting to meet her for 8 months and finally over Thanksgiving, my sister flew in (from Dubai I might add) with her adorable kiddies. Ohhhh, the photo shoots we had planned. Luckily we were able to fit a few in here and there. AND this little girl is as photogenic as they come! She was so much fun to photograph! I just had to share a few of my favorites. How cute are these two little guys!! I first photographed Carter last year while Mom was pregnant with Jack! The best part of my job is when families come back... and they've grown! This year I had a great time shooting both boys... I love it, and maybe it's because I have two little boys close together and I'm always trying to get that perfect picture of them. Anyway, they did a FABULOUS job for their ages and I think we got some beautiful shots.

This is my third year shooting the lovely Kenison Family and each year I am more and more impressed with how Wendy not only pulls together an amazing look for the entire family, but how well ALL 5 kids last throughout the shoot!! I think we got some great shots this year, despite a rainstorm that blew so many leaves off the trees the night before! You would have never guessed. AND the BCP delivers yet again!!

Jen and I counted... this is my 5th shoot with Mr. Jake!! I've said it before, I love when clients continue to come back and I get to see their little ones grow up, so this one was a lot of fun! I wanted to capture Jake's adorable personality, complete with Christmas spirit. Studio session are tough at this age, but with "Life is Highway" blasting in the back, and few smarties on the side, we were able to get some great shots.

Last month I had the pleasure of photographing the entire "Eye & Laser Center" Family. It was a B.L.A.S.T. The Eye & Laser Center was recently voted one of the top 20 places to work at by the Charlotte Business Journal. 30 minutes with this group and you can see why!! Not only do I love the fact that they brainstormed and came up with a location, perfectly paired with their personalities {a playground}, but they were willing to wear sunglasses, shout and cheer, hold papers, stand in a kick line... all this in coordinating scrubs no less. Meet The Incredible Mr. Joey... AND Crew - Photography with Hart Session {Charlotte Area Family Photographer}

This little guy just sparkles... in fact he radiates light! You would never suspect the ways in which Joey has been tested thus far in his life. He's too good with a "light saber"... but more on that in a minute :)

Earlier in the year when my neighbor approached me about nominating this family, they seemed amazing and I was thrilled to set the session up. After a long hot summer, everything came together for a lovely photo shoot last weekend. As I thought about what I wanted to present on the blog, I asked Joey's beautiful Mom Maggie to write a little about their journey. I wanted to share her words in hopes that we can all join efforts in their hope and prayers as Joey's Journey continues...

"Joey was born on May 12, 2005, a sweetest addition to our family. He was born with an abundance of little boy charm… a sparkle in his eyes, a contagious laughter that has seemed to brighten the days of those around him from a very young age. He was most assuredly a welcomed blessing to our growing family.

Then in December 2007, when Joey was 2 ½ years old, my husband and I learned that he had stage IV Neuroblastoma. After 5 initial rounds of chemotherapy at Levine Children’s Hospital (LCH), Joey became a patient at Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center (MSKCC) in New York City where he underwent two tumor resections and intensive radiation. He was declared without evidence of disease (NED) in June 2008. Upon receiving the news of his NED status Joey began another phase of treatment for Nueroblastoma patients known as Immunotherapy 3f8. He completed immunotherapy in April 2009 and remained healthy and strong until his recent relapse in September. Joey is currently receiving chemotherapy at LCH and will be returning to MSKCC in New York for further scans and testing to determine the next steps in his treatment plan.

In spite of the deep waters we are now wading, we are trusting in the grace and provisions we are given with each new day. Joey remains a source of joy, not only our lives, but also to the lives of those who have joined us on this journey. He is full of laughter, full of hope, full of life… and for that we are deeply thankful."

Friday, October 8th, I had the pleasure of participating as the photographer for the "A Purpose For Life Foundation " fundraiser/benefit. {Put on by the lovely Martinsen Family, in honor of their amazing daughter Victoria} It's always wonderful to see people come together, not only to support each other, but to help raise money towards and extremely worthy cause. This month has provided some great opportunities for me to give back through my photography with "Photography with Hart".

I truly believe, what goes around comes around... and even though it is an extremely busy time of year, taking time to help others is one of the most rewarding things that we can do. A Beautiful First For Me {Charlotte Area Live Birth Photography}

Somewhere in between booking my trip to Florida and the forthcoming Fall Sessions, I was presented with an amazing opportunity: the chance to photograph a live birth. I don't want to go into too many details for the privacy sake of the family, but I was thrilled at the prospect and immediately said yes... never mind that I had no hospital birth photography experience to date.

When I mentioned or shared this with others I had MIXED reactions. Some got teary eyed and choked up with me, others gave me looks of sheer horror... you want to do what, while I explained it would be tasteful and completely unobtrusive. Despite all that, I had high hopes everything would somehow all work out :)

So, the due date came and went... in fact a whole WEEK came and went and NOTHING. I postponed my trip to FL for a day on the off chance labor were to hit! Still nothing. I left for Florida sadly thinking my chance would pass... Oh well... maybe sometime down the line it would happen again.

My week in Florida flew by. I thought for sure the baby had arrived but when I heard from the "Mama" on Friday, the day we were leaving to head back to charlotte, I was SHOCKED that the baby still hadn't made his grand entrance. She asked, "Are you still in?" YES!! The stars were aligning... it was in the cards... I had to make it back.

Long story short, we arrived in Charlotte by 2am Sat. morning (thankfully I had my sister Ashlee w/ me). I got the call around 7:30... it could happen soon, can you come to the hospital. After a quick shower I jumped in my car. I prayed I wouldn't get lost and that my path would be clear!!

My prayers were answered... I MADE IT! It was an amazing experience. I was there a total of four hours shooting... it seemed like minutes. Being in the presence of this new life coming into this world was an absolute privilege for me... seriously... words can't explain it. I did my best to play "fly on the wall" yet capture each moment as best as I could. This is a very private experience for someone, but I'm truly grateful this family allowed me to be a part of it!! I am also truly hoping I will get to do this type of "session" again and so, I will share just a few unobtrusive shots.

FABULOUS FLORIDA PHOTO SESSIONS!!

When I returned home from my Hawaii/Florida trip mid August of this year, I swore to myself, that was the end of traveling until we headed back to FL for Thanksgiving. The Fall is a BUSY, exciting time for my business and after a FULL summer of traveling I was done.

But apparently, easily coerced!! After all, 6 weeks is enough to time to recover, right. So when friends call out in need... one must respond with haste!! Even though it was a working trip (and I don't use the term lightly!!) the boys and I had a great time. Seriously, some of my favorite photo sessions ever! I love when clients take extra time to "style" their session, choose the location, think about the final result etc.... I also love being involved in the process. I love the Hafeners... not only b/c they have 6 adorable kiddies that I get to frequently shoot, but because Mommy Tammy is literally up for ANYTHING I throw at her! A cupcake party in the middle of a random field on the side of the road with TWINS... absolutely :)

This was a special shoot for the younger kids and we had a BLAST!! The lighting and colors were gorrrrgeous and everyone behaved perfectly. Couldn't have asked for more... stay tuned for the whole family next month (see why I love them!!)

Katie won with her suggestion of Copperhead Island and the location did not disappoint. We enjoyed a few fall foliage shots to start with and then took things down to a small beach with a gorgeous sunset. The boys did fantastic (you too Dad) and Miss Katie was looking GOR-geous! ENJOY...

*Side Note: The Colemans did a GREAT job styling themselves. I love when outfits are not too "matchy-matchy". These colors went really well with the surroundings... they had the perfect amount of colorful punch and yet it wasn't too overpowering. En fin, don't be afraid of color :)

At least in my book! September is my favorite month of year - aside from the fact that I'll be celebrating my B-DAY this month {I love birthdays... not one of the haters!!}, I love early fall!! I love the weather, getting back on schedule, busting out light sweaters, gorgeous foliage for Fall sessions, lighting... I could go on and on!! It seems like these days more and more portrait/family/wedding photographers are steering away from the classic shoot and leaning more towards editorial/commercial type shoots. They are a bit more candid and often have themes. They are magazine-esque and even tell stories! I love it and want to live in both worlds!

On to the above photo. A blogger I love/follow mentioned she gathers a lot of her inspiration, poses and theming from high fashion magazine spreads... does people magazine count as high fashion? Either way, that's the mag my neighbor kindly leaves in my mailbox when she's done reading it and that's where I've been finding tidbits for my inspiration board. I don't know what I love most about this picture - the title or Nikki's legs? Either way, I want this shot. ANY TAKERS?!!! It doesn't have to be this risque, if you will, but it does have to scream: HOT MAMMA!! I want this same sort of layout: Glammy Mommy playing w/ little one. Isn't this everyone's fantasy? Perfectly long legs paired w/ sky high heels makes for perfectly appropriate play time attire?! (Tiff, I would have you do it w/ little miss Zoe, but you're all the way in Dubai dang it!!)

FALL APPOINTMENT SCHEDULING UPDATE!!

I am so excited to announce that photo session and consultation appointments can now be booked online by simply clicking on the "booknow" widget on the side bar:

I think this new method of booking will streamline session scheduling for both clients and myself. We will no longer need to email back and forth in order to "find a day that works". The booknow button will take you to my booking calendar 30 days out and allow you to select a day based on my availability. If you are seeking an appointment further than 30 days out, please email me with a specific date and I will be sure and get you on the calendar if available.

FALL SCHEDULE:

For the fall, I will be booking a limited amount of sessions on Wednesday/Thursday evenings (with very select few Fri/Sat. openings based on booked weddings. This year I will be booking sessions through Thanksgiving and then will resume shooting again in January!!

DAMON + LAHELA {Just Another Day in Paradise} - Hawaiian Wedding Photography Sneak Peek

What an amazing way to spend my FIRST trip to Hawaii! I had the opportunity to photograph Damon and Lahela's gorgeous wedding, complete with inter-island travel, tropical backgrounds and a fabulous sunset to top off the day.

The ceremony took place Saturday morning at the Temple in Kona (on the big Island of Hawaii). We hopped a quick, but not so cool flight {read NO air conditioning on the mini plane!!!} back to Oahu for the beachfront reception later that evening!! How can I describe their wedding day? I'll let the photos do the talking... and hopefully they'll do justice to the all beauty!

At the end of the day, it's not a bad gig... right!!

TNT Tuesdays - Gear and Such

I have had a lot of people ask me lately what kind of camera/lenses I use. I LOVE gear talk... and while I wish I owned a WHOLE lot more, I feel like I have built up the essentials which works for me right now.

So, last month I almost had a heart attach when my trusty Canon 30d completely quit on me during a photo shoot... long story, but suffice to say it was time to upgrade!! With a pending replacement, I agonized over the full frame Canon 5d Mark II (the "IT" camera in this industry) or the brand new Canon 7d (hit the market towards the end of '09 and was supposedly the upgrade to the original 5d). There are many reviews and comparisons out there, so I won't bore you with mine. In the end, the 7d - with a more attractive price among MANY more attractive features - won me over. It seems I have been shooting with it non-stop this past month and it has been everything and more!! I am so happy with the camera. I know each and every photographer has a different opinion... there's mine!!

As for lenses, I'll take one of each please!!! Hahaha, there are so many great lenses out there that serve many different purposes. For me though, this is what I feel like works best for a combo of life-style portraiture and weddings:

Don’t get all caught up in the hype over a new camera. A new camera will NOT make you a better photographer. Only YOU can do that. And it’s not done by reading the rants and raves on every new piece of gear that comes out each week. So shut down that MacBook, grab your camera and get out there and make some magic happen!

TRY NEW THINGS TUESDAY.... barely!!

I was wrapping up a few final emails and realized I had a few minutes to get a quick post in before the stroke of midnight!!

Today (tonight) I just got home from a whirlwind trip out west. I had an amazing family fly me out there to play paparazzi (sort of!!!) for their family reunion in Park City, UT. We had a couple of sessions and then I took a day to edit and finish up a Photo DVD Montage with some favorites from the weekend. It was one of those gigs that I knew would be a lot of work... but it also seemed like it would be a lot of fun!! And fun it was. All the details came together seamlessly and I even ended up finding this magnificent public farm/barn/property to shoot at. On top of all of that, the timing was incredible, with my family flying out to drop Tanner off at the MTC (yes, the final Clark is serving his mission!!) Along with a quick last minute trip to San Diego to celebrate my Grandpa's 90th!! WHEW.... what a whirlwind... but an amazing one at that.

Anyway, back to purpose of the post. What tidbit can I share with you tonight? Hmmmm... so many things circulating in my mind! It seems like a lot of posts lately have been about portraits of the up-close-and-personal-sparkly-eyes variety. Let's talk GROUPS!! My Park City gang was a fairly large group, with various sub-groupings throughout. This for me, is when the choreography of manual settings, lighting, poses etc... completely changes. As mentioned in previous posts, I tend to shoot on the LOWEST aperture possible to get that gorgeous, soft depth of field for portraits of one or two or a few. Think the opposite for the large group dynamic. It's still nice to have depth of field but you don't want to loose faces. What can you do to still balance your light and focus. *Disclaimer: I am not the end all expert here, but this is what works for me. I kick the aperture up to maybe 8 or 10, lower the shutter speed (but not too low and slow which would create blur) then add a nice amount of ISO (400 or so depending on fill light). With large groups I find you work harder with your available light. Luckily we had GORGEOUS lighting in Park City the night of our formal session and everything seemed to click!!

Of course I'm still a sucker for SHALLOW depth of field!

On a final note, I have to add that I feel immensely blessed to be doing something that I truly love!! The travel is definitely a side perk (though you work for it, believe me!!!) There's just something about being a spectator, whether it's among a crowd of this size or with a 5-day old baby... capturing/documenting a glimpse of some magical moment... ahhhh... I just love it :)

I was inspired by so many other photographers to fully revamp my BRAND and send across a clear, concise message/image with CONSISTENCY being the key factor. I realized I was too focused on the pictures and needed to step things up with my packaging, presentation, marketing materials etc... Long story short I came up with my own "branding kit" - a specific look with collateral pieces that will remain consistent. The kit design includes:

Today I want to talk photoshop actions, by way of first highlighting an incredible woman... a self-proclamed pioneer woman, as a matter of fact!! Many of you have probably heard of Ree Drumond from http://thepioneerwoman.com. SHE IS AWESOME!! Her website rocks my world and she is truly the trifecta: cooking, photography, home & garden. But, you're asking, " What does this have to do with photoshop actions?" Or you may even be asking "what is a photoshop action"

Simply put, an action is little more than a series of steps that you perform on an image. Photoshop records the steps as you perform them and stores the steps for you. You tell Photoshop when to start and stop recording. You can then replay the action at any time, on the current image or any other image. The action does everything you recorded just as if you were executing the commands yourself, and it does them much faster than you could do yourself. Saves time and energy a win, win!!

Here's the beauty... you can purchase (or sometimes download for free) incredible actions, that when used correctly can help to transform your images. For beginner level photoshop users, this is a great way to start playing with editing. By simply pressing play and letting the pre-recorded action series perform the steps to edit your pictures, you cut out a ton of guess work and enjoy easy editing with great results (*again with the disclaimer that you use them with consideration)

Back to the Pioneer Woman. On her website, under photography>photoshop actions she offer 2 FREE ACTION SETS for download. GO GET THEM NOW: Pioneer Woman Action Sets 1 and 2: Updated! They are fantastic actions to start with... all you have to do is download the link, double click on your download and they will immediately load in your actions palette (see screen shot below). First of all a HUGE THANK YOU to everyone who entered/participated!! I can't thank you enough for your enthusiasm in spreading the word via facebook and your own personal blogs. I work almost 100% via WOM {word of mouth} and I LOVE MY CLIENTS - both current and future - for making that a reality for me. This giveaway was also a great success in that I doubled my followers and received some FABULOUS inspiration by way of new locations.

I got a call yesterday from a lovely client...

Her husband and I belonged to the same gym and about a year ago he saw the "hart to hart digital" lettering on my vehicle in the parking lot and left me a note wanting to book!! Long story short I met up with the family and we had a fantastic shoot! I was thrilled to hear from them a year later! Rebooks are always one of my favorite contacts. A) It's always good to know people were/are happy with your work b/c they're knocking on your door again and B) Second, third, fourth... fourteenth shoots are always so much fun because, let's face it were friends by now and everyone is comfortable and vibrant.

As we got to talking about this year's shoot I was SHOCKED to hear that her husband had passed away recently. AND, to top it off, it happened at that very same gym we originally met at. Wow... I was blown away. Life is so fragile. And unexpected.

It has had me thinking all day long. We both agreed it was wonderful that they had taken the time to do family pictures last year. In fact the first things she told me when they originally booked was that she was NOT comfortable in front of the camera. Despite her fear we had a wonderful session and now that will be a treasure as their final family photo.

Again... there I go thinking. Memories, photographs... that's all we'll have. My job feels a little heavier, yet a bit more treasured tonight. It feels more like a privilege than a pleasure. I am so grateful I get to do what I do... to capture life!

{YOUR PHOTOS} = ART

Over the past few weeks as I have been trolling my favorite photography blogs (I call it "researching"!!!) It has become very apparent that I am lacking a huge component of what photography is all about: BEAUTIFULLY DISPLAYING THE FINAL PRODUCT!!! This year my goal has been to deliver a more quality product, but this week I have been thinking a lot about how I can take that one step further for my clients.

I started pulling design samples from fantastic photog blogs (I can't take credit for anything posted below) and I have been utterly inspired!! Over the next month I am hoping to create my own "look book" of sorts to help my clients take their photo design/displays to the next level!! Here's a sneak peak at what so many of my fellow photographers are providing as inspiration as well as the final product.

One final question: As a client, would a size/style guide help you in your decision making as to what to print and how to display it?

Introducing Erin & Mike - a most amazing couple!! They are beautiful both inside and out and ABSOLUTELY ROCKED their engagement session!! I have been in hot pursuit for the PERFECT field o' flowers for the past several years!!! And now that I've crossed the border into SC you'd think they would flow in abundance!! Not so... I just have not seemed to be able to find my field. So, after much fretting, searching and stressing I came upon this field only minutes before our actual session, (which, by the way did the job nicely for tonight's shoot)

Lenses and Settings and Such...

Over the past few months the "teaching" portion of my business has really taken off. I never claim to be the ultimate expert here but I love sharing what I know and I've had the opportunity and absolute pleasure to teach some fun photography and photoshop classes to an awesome array of photog enthusiasts!! From these classes and just in general one of the questions I get asked the most is:

WHAT IS THE BEST CAMERA FOR ME?

To which I always answer: The body of the camera is ONE thing... but single-handedly the most important piece of equipment you can buy is the LENS. And that is what will set YOU and your pictures apart from "point and shoot".

For portraiture, the most important aspect of the lens (in my opinion) is the aperture setting.

The following photo was taken with my 85mm 1.8 (aperture) lens.

ISO: 100

Aperture: 2.0

Shutter Speed: 1/200

Followed up with minimal touch up editing in photoshop.

A semi-close up portrait with a soft and beautiful depth of field (filled with blur, other wise known as bokeh) is achieved by setting your aperture to the very lowest number you can get. NOW, if your camera's lens only goes down to 5.6 (a standard lens setting) you will not be able to achieve the clarity of subject with such a blur-out depth of field.

My point, to achieve this look, you need a lens with the lowest aperture you can afford!!!! Happy Snapping!

Shooting toddlers/kids is actually one of my favorite things to do... especially when you've seen them grown up right in front of your lens! I am fortunate enough to have a handful of clients that continue to come back for milestones, events, birthdays etc... I LOVE THAT - so a huge thank you!!

This was a special shoot for Mr. Carsen... he was charismatic and did not disappoint. I think we got some really fun shots that captured his personality perfectly at this stage!

A Great Honor For Hart to Hart Digital Design

I was about to begin a post about the busy/crazy past week and half since coming home from my fabulous trip to NYC... then I realized I have not even posted a single thing relating to my award, opportunities, travel etc... from the past month! And this site, of all places should've been my first stop. I have already seen so many doors open, business wise because of it, so I think I will take a moment to share (though I know many have already heard way too much about this... if so, just stay tuned for the next few posts!!)

In short, back in March, I received word that I won first place in a national graphic arts competition I had entered several months prior. The competition took place through the American Mothers Inc. Organization, which hosts a national cultural arts competition yearly. I

I was soon after invited by the SC chapter branch to attend a special luncheon and event at the Governor's Mansion in Columbia honoring outstanding women in South Carolina. This was an incredible opportunity... I loved meeting and interacting with so many talented and special women.

The next week an article about my win was featured in our local magazine

Then, the last weekend in April (beginning of May) I had the opportunity to travel to the National AMI convention - held in NYC at the Waldorf Astoria this year, to attend the honoree dinner and accept the award. Another amazing opportunity filled with talented and incredible women from all over the US, including Puerto Rico. I made some great contacts and have some really neat opportunities coming my way.

My beautiful sis Ash, was able to spend the weekend with me and boy did we make the most of it!! Aside from photography and design, two of my favorite passions/past times are: BROADWAY and FOOD. Between that and celeb sighting, we rounded out a great weekend. Here a few other shots from the trip

Lastly, the most exciting part for me is this: Whenever I open fellow photographer's websites and/or blogs and they claim "national award winning" I've always thought to myself, DANG... I need to add that to my title somehow! Well, this is a start!! Here's to taking many more chances to beefing up my tagline!

Hello Everyone!!

As part of my new blog/biz goal for this year, I am going to start incorporating and highlighting other businesses and vendors that are pertinent to all things photography and design! This will hopefully give my blog a bit more dimension and more importantly provide helpful and exciting tips to all my readers.

So, on the heals of my last post regarding spring looks, clothing and style, Today I am proud to present my first ever guest post by Candace Monteleone of "Color by Candace".

Candace is a fantastic free lance makeup artist based right here in Charlotte. She boasts years of experience, has worked extensively with mac cosmetics and is taking the wedding industry by storm. I asked her to share a few makeup tips for any and all types of photo sessions:

Makeup is meant to enhance your natural beauty not to cover it up! This does not neccesarily mean you need to put a lot on in order to look good! I like to say don't let the makeup wear you!! No matter what type of shoot you have it is important to where makeup that you are comfortable with and that is complimentary to your skintone. 4 Fundamental products for every woman to have in there makeup bag are 1-concealer, 2-Bronzer or other finishing product, 3 - Mascara & 4 - Lipgloss!! These 4 essential products look good on everyone with variation of shade and brand preference!

Skin Care - A good skin care regiment is just as important as having good makeup in order to have great pictures! Drinking adequate water, cleansing the face & MOISTURIZING is vital in preparation to having a beautiful face!

Family Shoot - My best advice for this type of setting would be less is more! The goal should be more of a natural but still beautiful look! With any picture it is important to make sure you focus on your skin and having adequate/correct coverage. Blending is extremely important, you never want to see any harsh lines. Focus on having a natural fresh face playing up your favorite features, just be sure to stay away from anything too dramatic. Bright colors and/or really dark colors should be left for stage makeup!

Weddings/Bridals - A very polished look is the goal for a beautiful bride on her big day!! I usually apply a little more makeup for a bride/bridal portrait because it's all about getting that great picture! False lashes are a very popular request for a bride. It really makes a huge difference in pictures! I personally LOVE lashes!! A thick, long lash just gives that little something extra that really helps create a perfect picture! Flawless skin is another focal point and again nothing too dramatic, unless that is your theme and what you like!

Prom - Very similar to wedding makeup; however, there is a bit more room to play with colors and things. An important tip is to make sure makeup is age appropriate!

Fun Spring Tips - Spring is here and there are a ton of new beauty tips!! Some things that are really in right now is LUMINOUS SKIN! This look can be achieved by using a mineralize makeup. This is an absolutely beautiful look, very fresh faced! It makes your skin look like its glowing, I love it!! Another trend is to be more natural!! As I said before use makeup as a tool to enhance not to cover up!! Sheer pink glosses are really popular and for more of a dramatic look a neutral eye with ORANGE-RED lips is also very in right now!!

YOU'VE GOT THE LOOK

With spring here and several summer sessions already pending, this means lots of fun family photo shoots. To celebrate I thought I would delve into one of my favorite topics in the form of a question I get from clients 9 times out of ten: WHAT SHOULD I WEAR!!

Style is very personal and personally I like to have fun with it! If you are a jeans and white T-shirt kind of family or if the classic khaki and black fits you well, that is a timeless look that I would never argue with. I do personally feel like though, if you're going to add color #1, not everyone should be in the exact same polo shirt of the exact same color AND #2 the colors have to work TOGETHER!! I bought a scarf the other day and got to thinking. I could plan an entire photo session wardrobe around this... so that's exactly what I did. Just as an EXTREME example of having fun with color!

Start with an item that you love and build your "color palette" around that. A color palette should have at least 3 to 4 colors that go well together.

Once you have decided on colors, start building wardrobe pieces around the palette. REMEMBER, not everyone will be wearing EACH color, but 2 or 3 would be appropriate to make the entire photo cohesive. After a bit of planning, this could be a sample family wardrobe:

Bright colors and lots of them are not for everyone. Maybe you like subdued neutrals with a splash of purple. Or browns with a splash of turquoise. The most important thing is that the style, colors & setting help to tell the story of you and DON'T distract from it.

Also, I find that tight fitting clothing, including sleeveless tops, short skirts, spaghetti straps don't always photograph well. I mean even with the perfect figure a lot of skin, distracts from faces and smiles... but that's just on a side note!!!

Literally!! This beautiful couple has a fantastic story that starts on eHarmony... and in my opinion they couldn't be a better match.

Also in Harmony were the elements and the location, which made for a fabulous engagement shoot. This randomly, industrial spot is going to be one of my new favorite places I can already tell.

And as if we didn't already have everything going for us, Keira and Jerry were perfection in front of the camera! They were so natural, I kept joking they were posing themselves. They were such good sports to dodge traffic, wait for trains, lay in the grass and turn down drinks from a homeless fellow!

THE MAGIC OF PHOTOSHOP

Taking a fabulous picture is just the start!! There are a few tricks up many photographer's sleeves though, that make good photos GREAT. I'll explain! First, however, you must start with solid basics. A good camera and lens with knowledge of manual settings will get you pretty far. A few posts ago I discussed the importance of great lighting... this will get you even further. Composition, posing and use of subject can seal the deal if done right. 9 times out of 10 though, your picture could use a little extra UMPHHHH!!

That's where photoshop comes in. Let me just reiterate that I am not a FAN of over edited pics. I also can not stand some of the popular picasa edits (free editing program) i.e. blurred background, sepia etc... Photoshop may seem intimidating, but through simple steps, layering and actions, the results that can be achieved are amazing.

Let's start with a normal picture. I was teaching a camera class on Thursday and we were practicing on this cutie pie. It was noon, the worst time of day to shoot, but we were able to get a few okay shots. This was taken w/ an 85mm 1.8 Canon lens, aperture: f 2.8 shutter speed: 1/640.

This shot below is not something I would necessarily even think twice about. It's average at best and I could critique it all day long. But it works for this tutorial so here it is:

My 3 minute photoshop fix: level adjustment, crop, 3 action sets: "lovely & ethereal", "old west" and "warmer" all manual adjusted to desired opacity (actions are pre-programed editing tasks), popped the eyes, ran a small edge burn, smoothed skin and got rid of dots, blemishes and redness.

AND WHALLLA!! A much better final product. Not necessarily a print, but now it's a keeper!!

LIGHTING IS EVERYTHING!!!

This is probably one of my favorite topics when it comes to photography and a great place to start. I think the lighting in the majority of "point and shoot pictures" fall prey to a few common mistakes that can be fixed in an INSTANT if you just remember a few keys!! Let me try and break it down a bit the best I can. Of course, my huge disclaimer for this post and my blog: I am not the absolute expert... but I have tried and failed (especially with lighting) enough now to know what works and why. And the great news is, it's not extremely technically... just a few rules to live by.

To preface the topic, good/proper lighting is the KEY to composing great pictures, no matter the camera, lens, flash etc... If you start with a great light source you are 75% there!! How many of us have seen and/or taken pictures that look like this:

Eeek!!! Aside from shadows galore, the photo is completely backlit and leaves little or no light on the subject's face (my 4-year old who is a total ham in front of the camera). For those who are crossing over to manual settings, this was shot at ISO: 400, Shutter Speed: 125, Aperture: 2.5. Even if it was on Auto, there is still not a good light source for the subjects face. If the flash were to fire, the subject would no doubt be illuminated, but it would also cast shadows and cause some glare from the window. Plus a lot of times when we use our flash it illuminates the subject WAY too much and causes red eye, leaving the background dark.

THE FIX: SIMPLE!!! ALWAYS REMEMBER THIS: Shoot with your subject facing the light source so they can be illuminated!! You (as the shooter) when possible should always have your back to the light. (Unless you are trying to achieve a different look). It's such an easy fix. When taking pics of your kids in your house USE YOUR WINDOWS... just don't shoot into them. When shooting outside, shoot in soft sunlight (evening is best) and let their little faces shine by facing towards a dropping sun. The difference:

Not a show-stopping, professional picture, but a HUGE difference!! AND, this picture was set with the EXACT same manual settings: ISO: 400, Shutter Speed: 125, Aperture: 2.5.

On a side note... I have often heard people say, "if I don't like the picture and/or lighting, I just lighten it in my editing program and turn it black and white". Okay, that is an option, but you will achieve gray and white at best and the picture still looks bad!! Also remember using an editing program to "lighten" your pictures will cause noise and pixelation. Look at the differences here. Both were turned B&W in photoshop (and the right one was even lightened), but b/c the left one STARTED with great light, it makes all the difference!!! *note, if you click on this pic and enlarge it you will see the staggering difference!!

A New Look, A New Website... Almost there!!

Here's a little sneak peak at the new logo... thoughts!! I have been wanting to incorporate a little more personality and flair in my logo and website. Though the website has about a week to go, I finished the logo today and I'm excited to share!!

Also, I will be drawing for the "On-the-go tips guide" on Friday!! Good luck :)

At the beginning of the week, I posted some tidbits on exciting promotions taking place over the next few months. I will be highlighting those a bit more in the future, but today I wanted to introduce a few more new elements to the blog.
